The Garden Fairy by Kelly Lohr

This is a large lay-up Forton cast made from a 1 and 1/2 life-size fired ceramic original. The final product was tinted with paint washes and sealed. Forton can be lay-up or solid cast. It can be filled with many materials or colored. Some choices might be limestone, a terra cotta look using pigments or filled with metal powders for a metallic look. It is suitable for outdoor use if sealed properly. It is also non-toxic.

MakingThe Garden Fairy by Kelly Lohr

What you see is the main mold for the sculpture. The mold is silicone and has nine parts. The Forton has been layered  in the mold and the mold reassembled. Here I am sealing seams on the Garden Fairy. The legs were cast separately and added in the next step. When we take off the mold there is still finishing work to do like clean up the seam lines.

Limestone-filled Forton Bricks

These are Filled with limestone. The final product looks and feels exactly like the limestone originals. They are by Dale Enochs and will go to the new Indianapolis Botanical Gardens. Dale is doing 7 large fountains and 3 sculptures for this project. The original bricks, 100 different carvings, will be incorporated into the masonry walls. We made molds from 19 different bricks, cast 10 of each brick, to start the edition of 250 each. The original limestone bricks were returned to Dale unblemished. The Forton bricks will be sold in the Botanical Garden's gift shop.

A colored Forton relief.  We use the same universal pigments used in latex and oil based paints.  Any color your paint store can make can be duplicated in Forton. Note the deep rich color.

2 Forton wall sculptures and free standing sculpture, all Forton MG, to show some of the range in pigmentation and forming.
